In homage to their father the brothers Charles and Peter Gimpel called their gallery Gimpel “Fils”. The year was 1946. Since then the gallery has moved from strength to strength whilst maintaining its family ethos; the dealer Rene Gimpel acts as a director. In the 50s and 60s the Gallery gained something of a reputation in the world of the avant garde and to this day it continues to support and exhibit the works of the older generation of working British artists.
The gallery’s perseverance in such a notoriously fickle world is a testament to the brothers’ ability to spot quality contemporary artists; thankfully their skills were passed on to the next generation and the original dynamism with which the gallery was established has never been lost.
