Recently taken over by London super promoters Adventures in the Beetroot Field, The Amersham Arms is the bar at the forefront of the New Cross renaissance.

Whilst the mix of old boys and loved up students persists, they've now been joined by quizzes, celebrities and nights with line-ups so good they rival Fabric.

This could be the reason why many in Shoreditch have been feeling oddly drawn south of the river lately...

The Amersham Arms is an unpretentious venue conveniently located across the road from New Cross rail station. While the front lounge has a student pub feel, the backroom boasts an intimate yet surprisingly capacious club space. After a long funk of mainly low-key and not-particularly-exciting nights, it's been recently picking up, drawing well-known stand-up comics such as Richard Herring and trendy DJ acts such as Rusko, who recently headlined an official Field Day after-party. The vibe is inclusive and lively on club nights, making it a worthy alternative to the usual East London hipster hangouts. Weekdays are more run-of-the-mill, but it's a relaxed, comfortable spot for a lazy pint or Sunday roast (they whip up mean cocktails too).

If you are anywhere near the Amersham arms on the second Sunday of the month, check out the brilliant Brockley Ukulele Group. They play a Ukebox of 60 songs at 8pm. My fave is Daft Punk on the Uke. Best thing is, it's all free. Next gig is on Sunday 12th June.
