Established in the 19th century as a general market, Portobello garnered its well deserved reputation as the definitive antiques market in 1960s London. Snaking for almost a kilometre around what are now among the most desirable streets to found in our great city, it encompasses pretty much every aspect of street trade.

From boutique fashion and assorted piles of vintage rags to organic fair-trade edible underpants and pairs of sexy young carrots, you can find pretty much anything. Just leave it to the tourists to buy the £20 teabags.

The market is busiest on Saturday, but also runs on Sundays, and the clothes stalls under the Westway at Ladbroke Grove go up on Thursdays as well - a chance to browse without the crowds.
