Crossness Pumping Station really is something else. Known as the Cathedral to Waste, it's a giant Victorian sewage pumping station, situates just south of the river and way out east.
Designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and Charles Henry Driver and constructed between 1859 and 1865, it's a monument to engineering ingenuity and attention to detail.
After years of disrepair, it's now a Grade I listed building, and quite right too - it really is a dazzling (and bonkers) place.
It's open from time to time for visitors - but best to check their website.
