Fortnum & Mason is one of the coolest stores in London and one of the most famous in the world. The Fortnum's hamper is one of the classic gifts - there's no way that anybody wouldn't be delighted to receive one of those branded wicker hampers, stuffed full of rare and delicious goodies.
Fortnum's was established in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason and has since held all manner of Royal Warrants. The store is best known for the amazing food hall, which sells all manner of delicacies, often at quite a price, but there are loads of other sections too: tea rooms, restaurants, and floors selling all manner of fashion, furniture, and sundry trinkets.
Finally, for you fact fans out there: it was Fortnum's who invented the Scotch egg, way back in 1851. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is enough to secure their immortality.

Even if marvelling at the world's most expensive tea set is not your thing, this shop (for want of a better word) is one of London's top shopping attractions. The food hall is world famous and packed full of English delicacies, even Heinz baked beans.

I can't say I've ever purchased anything here, nor do I plan to. I actually came looking for a gift of traditional British tea for my American friends and left empty handed after taking one look at the prices - and took a bus up the road to get some Harrods tea boxes for a quarter the price although about six times the kitsch factor.
Fortnum & Masons seems to serve a single purpose and that is to look pretty, which it does amazingly well. The interior decoration, the bits and bobs for sale (which often feel more like pieces at an art gallery) and the snazzy confectionery department are wonderful for a visit, just don't expect any deals behind the F&M doors!
