Selfridges

400 Oxford Street, Oxford Street, W1A 1AB

Founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge in 1909, Selfridges is a chain of upmarket UK department stores. The London Selfridges branch on Oxford Street is the flagship store, and with six floors of over ten acres of shopping space, it is one of the largest shops in the UK, second only to Harrods. With its trademark yellow and black logo, legendary window displays and classy reputation, Selfridges London has become something of an institution.

Although its offerings are generally expensive, its floors packed with tourists and  and its floorplan maze-like, the array of incredible merchandise is virtually unparalleled. From limited edition trainers to vintage champagne, Selfridge's pretty much has it all covered.

An Oxford Street landmark, the London Selfridges store is renowned for its architectural excellence. Designed by Daniel Burnham, the impressive building was one of the first in the country to have the steel frame construction which is standard today.

Selfridges London has a reputation for crowd-pulling events.  From the public exhibition of Louis Bleriot's monoplane after the first cross-Channel flight in 1909, to the first public demonstration of television by the Scottish inventor John Logie Baird in 1925, Selfridges has over the years played host to many events which never fail to attract immense interest. Modern events include wine tasting, fashion shows, live music events and the recent celebration of the store's 100th birthday.
