The Comedy Store is London's mecca for funny. This is the stage that every aspiring comedian wants to take, the venue which has seen every comedian of note do their thing.

It was on this stage that a generation of young British comedians virtually invented the concept of alternative comedy: Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmonson, Alexei Sayle, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French... they all played here first. From Harry Enfield to Julian Clary to Lee Evans, this place has had more influence on popular British comedy (and television) than even the Working Men's clubs of the North.

With consistently good line-ups and an electric atmosphere, the Comedy Store is irrefutably one of the best places to see comedy in London.

I was quite surprised by my first visit to the Comedy Store. It was the midnight show on a Friday night and I’d heard that this was peak time for rowdy rugby players and bemused tourists in the audience. Instead it was a fairly sedate crowd, mostly students, and despite one of the acts being utterly abysmal there was not one heckle. The show itself was funny enough however that was mostly down the sustained efforts of compeer Ian Stone All in all, it was a good night but it was hard to shake the feeling that I’ve seen much funnier acts for a lot less money.
