Hampstead Theatre

Swiss Cottage Centre, Primrose Hill, NW3 3EX
Tel: 0207 7229301

Small but perfectly formed fringe theatre in North London’s intellectual heartland which has pursued the commission, writing and production of new writing for fifty years. In 2002 they got themselves a brand new purpose built venue.

Playwrights who have had their early work produced with the Hampstead company include Simon Block, Michael Frayn, Brian Friel, Hanif Kureishi, Mike Leigh, Tamsin Oglesby and Harold Pinter. Basically a who’s who of theatre.

A great venue, an impeccable pedigree of past writers and a loyal fanbase have all helped cement the Hampstead’s place as a leading venue for new writing.

This is such a pretty little theatre that's situated overlooking the picturesque Swiss Cottage Park. When I last visited on a balmy, summer's day, groups of theatre-goers were spilling out of the premises onto the grass. Some were even lying spread-eagled in the sunshine - yep, that's the sort of relaxed atmosphere you get here.

Apart from the auditorium that's perfect for small, intimate productions, there's also a cafe bar with some outdoor terrace seating. But if bar snacks don't tickle your fancy, a couple of good Japanese restaurants round the corner might.
