One of eight Royal Parks of London, Regent's park is located in the Northern part of central London, both in the City of Westminster and the Borough of Camden. A sizeable 487 Acres, the park is home to the London Zoo, Queen Mary's Gardens and Regent's College, and is renowned for its collection of 30,000 or so roses from 400 varieties. The park has had a rich history, and throughout the centuries has developed a wide range of attractions that appeal to visitors from all walks of life. Regent's Park is also noted for its close proximity to the celebrity enclave of Primrose Hill, attracting hoards of paparazzi and celebrity spotters with nothing better to do.

The royal history of Regent's Park began between 1536 and 1541 when Henry VIII, citing a penchant for divorce, broke away from the Catholic Church by dissolving monasteries and appropriating their lands. The land where the park now stands was thus claimed from Barking Abbey and turned into a hunting ground by the King. Over the centuries portions of the land were leased for dairy and hay production, and it was not until King George IV (then the Prince Regent) that the decision was made to create a public park.

Architect John Nash was hired by the Prince to develop the plans, and the park officially opened to the public in 1845, initially for two days a week. By the 1930's Queen Mary's Gardens were developed, marking the first time that the inner ring of the park became publically accessible. The inner circle also contains the Open Air Theatre, which attracts over 120,000 visitors each year during the 15 week summer season.

Athletics are also an important feature of Regent's Park. This is of course due to 'The Hub', which is the name given to London's largest outdoor sports area. The Hub contains a pavilion and pitches, and regular professional and amateur tennis, netball, athletics, rounders, football and rugby games held here every day. In addition, there are three playgrounds for children each with an attendant, and there is boating on the main lake.

Other attractions of note are the numerous villas designed by John Nash, and the giant gold domed London Central Mosque. Various events are also held in the park including the Camden Green Fair and regular educational and wildlife tours. Opening and closing times are dependent on the seasons, so it is recommended that prospective visitors check The Regent's Park official site before planning a visit.

Opening and closing times of the park change depending on the season.
