Although steeped in history to the point of almost drowning in it, this old pub has somewhat lost its roots in the heady dance of local redevelopment and dollar signs. Situated on the quay from which the founding fathers set off in 1620, the building was restored in the 50s, presumably to give the ailing area some historical significance.
Now the clientèle is largely drawn from tourists, rather bizarrely celebrating the achievements of their puritanical (aka teetotal) forefathers by blowing the froth off a few. Locals and real ale fans enthuse about the beer selection - the food is insipid but there is a great selection of real ales.
A popular watering hole with good passing trade and a few loyal locals, kept happy by delicious beer and a cracking weekly quiz.
