Gielgud Theatre

Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho, W1D 6AR
Tel: 0870 9500915

In 1994 when this theatre was renamed for John Gielgud it was a fitting choice. This is one of the two giants of Shaftesbury Avenue (with the Queen’s Theatre) which sit at the heart of the West End.

A huge, comfortable and well equipped theatre which has a history of serious work from Shakespeare, to American classics like The Graduate and One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, via a cannon of traditional highbrow English work, for instance, Harry Potter getting naked in the recent production of Equus.

The Gielgud Theatre is a lovely, cosy theatre. I last saw Avenue Q there, and as soon as you walk in you can't help but notice the beautiful interior. It's nice and easy to find your way around (helpful for that last minute dash to the bar) and if you are feeling lazy they bring refreshments, with a personal favourite being the little ice cream tubs.

Whilst I was sitting at the back, you are not too far away, and still feel like part of what's going on, on-stage. Good ventilation, comfortable seats and (hopefully) an amazing production, make this venue a pleasure to visit.
