1985, the Cold War is at its height, the Nintendo is hitting the shops and in London the Groucho Club is opening its doors in Soho for the ever thirsty publishing industry, inspired by Groucho Marx’s famous line, "I don’t want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member."

Originally opened to be the antidote to 'normal clubs', skip forward to 2007 and you'll find that the Groucho has been in constant flux, with its current guise featuring 3 bars and a brasserie.

It's still full of publishing people, mind, and such delicate creatures do not enjoy their evenings of mystery and romance ruined by the company of uncouth strangers. Entry is a difficult blag, unless you know someone, but the refusals are polite.

If you do get in, you'll find a stylish, well thought out venue with plenty of space and plush furnishings, and the odd gibbering celebrity making a fool of themselves while everyone else talks shop and drinks good wine in a relaxed setting.
