Unpretentious to say the least, Jazz after Dark is the sort of place a back ally in New Orleans could well serve up, but probably wouldn’t. The ready-mix of jazz, blues and swing is palatable, but not one for connoisseurs of the genre.
Popular and indeed quite irritating distractions include young American students fresh to the city with a wallet of (expensive) dollars to burn and an unquenchable desire to beat their homebound friends to legal alcohol intoxication. Bring on the screeches of 18 year old Kirsten from Alabama and the howls of the odd US Marine back from a session of bloodletting in the Far East.
The food is acceptable, and remarkably cheap for this part of town. Don’t expect the same from the cocktails, which although delicious are re-mortgage material. The biggest pull the club has to offer is its occasional gigs from North London (currently) cool kids. Catch one of those and you’ll be singing all the way back to this atmospheric little bar.
