Village Soho

81 Wardour Street, Soho, W1D 6QD
Tel: 020 7439 4089

Stylised, space age gay bar which opened in 1991 and became a model for the rejuvenation of the Soho scene, in terms of design and ethos. This place is always busy and buzzing, and the three floors offer everything from pumped up dancefloor action to the chance to lie on a couch sipping cocktails and surveying the streets of London.

Downstairs in the main room everything is described in clean metal lines, with big screens showing MTV or whatever the hot show of the moment is. There are two similar futuristic cubby holes, the cafe and 'V Underground' which is a tiny space age boutique. Upstairs the style changes completely into a sort of opulent bordello with sofas, prints on the walls, and lounge music.

A playground for Soho's gay scene that has inspired dozens of imitators and continues to enjoy iconic status.

You've heard the saying, "It takes a village"? Well, feel free to take (or leave) this Village as you choose. The bar's prime location in Soho makes it easy to stop in for a quick drink. However, the clientele and bar staff make it just as easy to leave. The drinks are comparably priced to surrounding areas, and the space itself affords much in the way of shiny, glowy-like objects to stare at. If you fancy watching moving images instead of talking, take your date to The Village.

Tuesday nights are karaoke nights in the downstairs section of the bar. You already know what you're getting into with this appealing (or unappetizing) bar spectacle , so take it or leave it as you choose.

The best bet would be to stop by during happy hour (it's until 8pm every day) with a few mates, then continue merrily on your way. The Village isn't terribly offensive, but like many of its patrons, its rather unremarkable.
