Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

A stunning reproduction of the original Globe theatre, built 200 yards from the original site on the banks of the Thames. A beautiful job of work has been done here and this is a theatre to make Londoners proud, with wonderful timber construction and a thatched roof, the first to get planning permission since the Great Fire of 1666.

For an authentic Elizabethan experience buy a cheap 'groundling' ticket and stand directly in front of the stage like the poorer theatre fans of a bygone era. However, you might want to choose a seat in the gentry galleries for longer shows or if the weather forecast is for rain. That said, in bad weather the actors on stage get lashed by wind hail and sleet just as hard as the crowd – a joy to behold.

As discussed, the theatre is open to the elements so visit on a warm day. Not only that – they also stage authentic full costume period Shakespeare which is utterly fantastic as long as you choose the right production. Some can be mildly boring and unfunny; it appears that after all those centuries some things never change. On its day though, this is a magnificent theatre.

It doesn't matter that it's not the original (come on, be fair... how many wooden structures from 1600 are actually still standing and in use today?), it doesn't matter that it's listed in every London tour book and is usually swamped with tourists, and it certainly doesn't matter that the majority of tickets sold are standing only. This is Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (almost) as it was in the Bard's day and the quality of the theatre productions, the energy of the passionate audience and the thrill of being transported 400 years into the past make this an experience you can't miss. It's unfortunate that so many Londoners write off this venue as too touristy and often miss incredible theatre. If you haven't already, get yourself down to the Globe and brush up on your Olde English.

Unfortunately everything conspired to go a little bit wrong the last time I ventured to the globe: it rained, the play was dull and planes kept flying overhead, dispelling somewhat the myth of being transported back in time. That said, while the production was fairly flat, the atmosphere certainly wasn't and the rain and the wind made it seem all the more authentic! I would certainly advise bringing some kind of waterproof attire and selecting your play wisely but overall it's an experience that shouldn't be missed!
