Tate Modern

Bankside, Southbank, SE1 9TG
Tel: 020 7887 8888

Opened in 2000 at the dawn of a new millennium, Tate Modern is London's flagship contemporary art museum. Housed in the colossal former Bankside Power Station opposite St Paul's Cathedral, the gallery is one of the major landmarks on the Thames skyline.

The permanent collection is spread over five floors, each arranged thematically rather than chronologically. This part of Tate Modern is free to visit and includes major works by the likes of Warhol, Rothko, Picasso, Lichtenstein, Martin Creed, Sol LeWitt, and Anish Kapoor.

Tate Modern also hosts high-profile temporary exhibitions, which you have to pay to see. But these are generally so major – think Gilbert & George, Dalí, Kandisnsky – that the entry fee feels like a bargain.

One of the things that sets Tate Modern apart from its counterparts across the world is the vast Turbine Hall. This space originally housed the old electricity generators but now plays host to a programme of site-specific installations, most notably Carsten Holler's much-publicised slides and Doris Salcedo's Shibboleth, a massive crack running down the centre of the hall.

Tate Modern is one of Spoonfed's Best Galleries in London.

This is one of the best galleries in London and I think it's unique curation contributes to this. Finally - a group of museum directors and curators who have realise you don't NEED to group things according to the year they were made.

Although this gallery runs a close second to MoMA in New York as my favourite gallery in the world, it is by far the best one in the UK. Tate Modern attracts the best temporary exhibitions and their permanent collection is basically a shrine to the artists I most admire.

Enjoying the collection of the Tate Modern would really depend on your attitudes towards modern and abstract art. Some pieces are inspiring while others can only be explained as elaborate hoaxes at the expense of the gallery and public. At the very least though, this collection will spark a lot of conversation, and that's never a bad thing.

Always worth popping in as you go past, even if just to see what weird and wonderful thing is going on in the massive entrance hall... Sometimes it's good and sometimes, well, it's modern art...

Not quite Tate Britain, it's still a winner, and even if you are not a fan of art, quite a few of the exhibitions are a good laugh (not in a bad way - they are just fun!).

Seeing as it's free it's a great studenty attraction and worth a quick visit every once in a while.

The Tate Modern and The Hayward Gallery (to a slightly lesser extent) are pillars of the Southbank's greatness. Always pop in whenever I'm nearby and absolutely love the Great Turbine Hall - in my hugely under-art-informed opinion, the world's single greatest art installation space.
