When the 2012 London Olympics roll round, this historically significant area will be filled with thick gold sand to hold the beach volleyball competition.

The Horses Guard Parade has been the home to a multitude of uses since the 17th century. Situated off Whitehall, it was once a tournament field in the time of Henry VIII and is also where the annual birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth I are held.

Having lost some of its charm over the years, the ceremony of Trooping the Colour to commemorate the Monarch's official birthday is still celebrated at the Horse Guards Parade every year.
