Stunning, boxy church completed in 1728 and restored and expanded after being hit in the Blitz. St John’s Smith Square is one of the premiere classical music venues in the country, but also repays a visit as a sightseer, with a beautiful vaulted dome and many interesting nooks and corners.
St John’s manages a full calendar of concerts and recitals. Many of these are in association with local schools, and should be avoided if you are not related to one of the little darlings – although the same cannot be said of recitals by the outstanding boy choirs of Westminster Abbey and Cathedral. Every significant chamber group and orchestra will also try and play the venue at least once every two years.
A beautiful building blessed with huge, clear acoustics and plenty to look at as you listen, St John’s Smith Square is a huge asset to London’s classical music community.
