Situated just west of the Palace of Westminster stands The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, which is almost always referred to as Westminster Abbey. Though evidence suggests that an abbey has existed on the site from 960, the current structure is magnificently gothic, and is likely dated to the 1200’s, with repairs and additions being made ever since. The abbey is of significant historic and traditional importance to the royal family, and houses The Westminster Abbey Museum.

In 1066 King Harold became the first monarch to hold his coronation at Westminster. Ever since, every British monarch who could be formally crowned in London has done so in the Abbey. Members of the Royal Family also marry and are laid to rest in the abbey, and in fact the two most widely viewed events ever to take place at the church were the wedding of Charles and Diana, and the princess’ subsequent funeral.

Royals aren’t the only famous individuals who are associated with the Abbey.  The nave is the final resting place of such important scientists as Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton while the famous Poet’s Corner holds the bodies of Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling among many others.  Others are simply honoured with effigies including William Shakespeare, Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

The Westminster Abbey Museum houses a unique collection of royal funeral effigies and other miscellaneous artefacts including Mary II's coronation chair. For those interested in worship, or simply in viewing the interior of the abbey, the church is open on a daily basis, but has specific hours dedicated to either religious services or tours.

Tours are available from official guides and provide a lot of illumination, they will give history enthusiasts a quick handle on the construction of the Abbey and some off her more remarkable stories. Many may prefer to wander at random and this will always be rewarded with something unique.

Concerts here tend toward the choral with an excellent Abbey Boys Choir resident across the way and the Christmas Carol Services are particularly moving and enjoyable.

A great afternoon to spend with the family, and even though it's a bit morbid, I really enjoyed skulking the graveyard for Poets Corner.
