A warren of old buildings from the Black Eagle brewery which shut in 1988, the Truman is constantly expanding and changing with new rooms being renovated and declared fit for public use with the passing months.
Much of the former brewery houses offices, nightclubs and restaurants but there is a growing amount of theatre here, notably in the Boiler House, a huge brick warehouse with space for several stages, often suspended from the ceiling around the audience. This is a perfect setting for theatre "in the round", with actors and audience mingling in productions like the recent war drama Fallujah.
Relentlessly trendy, bare walled, minimally equipped and only staging new writing, this is an art space worthy of Brick Lane.
