The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is famous for hosting Wimbledon, the world's only tennis Grand Slam still to be held on grass.
It started life, however, as a croquet club in 1868: the first tennis championship was held two years later in order to raise money for a new roller for the croquet lawns.
Today tennis is the big thing. The Lawn Tennis Museum is particularly entertaining and informative. The club operates mainly as a private members' only tennis club, apart from during the Championships when people have been known to queue overnight in order to catch a glimpse of their white-clad heroes and heroines.
Be warned however: it's always best to bring in as much food as you can. Prices for Pimms and strawberries and cream are verging on the ridiculous.
