Alexandra Palace

Alexandra Palace Way, Wood Green, N22 7AY
Tel: 020 8365 2121

Sitting imposingly atop Muswell Hill, looking out over northeast London, Alexandra Palace has survived two major fires, was used to jam enemy radar during the Blitz and became the icon of the BBC for half a century.

Nowadays, it is an internationally respected venue with room for 8000, and regularly plays host to legal raves, gigs from the likes of Arcade Fire, Morrissey and Franz Ferdinand and exhibitions ranging from bike shows to hairdresser's fairs.

With excellent views over the city and 196 acres of surrounding parkland, there can’t be many more scenic places to rock out, and even when nothing is going on, the Phoenix Bar is perfect for a pint as the sun sets beneath the distant horizon.

I have mixed feelings about Alexandra Palace as a music venue. On the one hand, it's an amazing building with fantastic views over North London and has all the ingredients for being one of the coolest heavy-weight places to catch the next hot act.

On the other hand, every time I've been there the production has been terrible (for example Arcade Fire) and the main room has felt hollow - the consequence being that the atmosphere ends up pretty rubbish.

For me the juries out and I look forward to returning soon, hopefully to squash the last few experiences.
