Last night saw Armin van Buuren officially crowned number one in DJ Mag's Top 100 poll party of 2009.
The Dutchman – who has now won the competition for the the third straight year - was present at the ceremony held at Ministry of Sound along with other stars David Guetta (3rd), Above and Beyond (4th), Gareth Emery (9th) and Sander van Doorn (10th).
Others to have made it into the top flight included 2008 runner up Tiesto who again finished in second place, Paul Van Dyk (5th), Ferry Corsten (7th) and Markus Schulz (8th). These poll regulars were this year joined by Deadmau5 who finished sixth after a hugely successful twelve months.
Van Buuren whose radio show 'A State Of Trance' recently celebrated it's 400th episode attracting 250,000 listeners worldwide told DJ Mag of his surprise: “This was the least expected one...I can understand that people might think if you win it for the third time it's not that special...but for me it's the most special...I expected David Guetta to win”.
Guetta was expected by some to dethrone van Buuren at the top after arguably the most high-profile 2009 of any of the candidates. He enjoyed huge mainstream success after collaborations with U.S hip-hop and r'n'b artists including 'Sexy Bitch' with Akon, 'I Gotta Feeling' with the Black Eyed Peas and 'When Love Takes Over' with ex Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland which ruled the summer dance-floor's.
The Frenchman said to DJ Mag: “Everybody in America wants that sound now and I'm sure that, not only for me but for the whole dance community, it is going to be a new world...this is only the beginning”.
Canadian Deadmau5 – real name Joel Zimmerman – also represents a more mainstream-friendly choice but appeals to hardcore fans also with work that shifts away to more abstract themes. It is this direction which is likely to make up his first 'artist album' set for release in 2010: “Musically it's gonna be a 180 degree shift from what everyone is used to, stuff that I enjoy doing, stuff that challenges me” he told DJ Mag.
