London's bars and clubs treat New Year's Eve as something of a cash cow. But not every night out will cost you the earth just to step inside, so clubbing editor Tomas Olesen runs down his top 5 recession-busting New Year's Eve events.
Big Chill's Big Bashy New Year's Eve Party
In terms of cheap it doesn't come much cheaper than free. 'Ah it'll be rubbish music' I hear you scoff. Not at all! With sets from Brad Baloo of Nextmen fame, Wrongtom, Chris Read, BobaFatt, Mo fingaz, Max D, and Flipz it's actually one of the most fun looking line-ups in Shoreditch. As it's totally gratis it's a good idea to get there really early...before they open early.
Free New Year's Eve Party
Mother Bar are also bucking the masses-of-money-for-entrance trend and throwing a big free party with all their residents and some surprise special guests. Between Big Chill Bar and here you could have a very cool NYE out in Shoreditch and not spend a penny on entry tax.
Reggae Roast
The other member of the Big Chill family in London lives in Kings Cross and although not free it's only 15-20 if you grab an advance ticket. Which for this kind of level of quality on NYE is really good value. UK garage pioneer El-B will be there as will the bass quake that is the Channel One sound system. With UK hip hop don Daddy Skitz headlining room 2 this is a hot ticket.
Spredluv NYE
The Spredluv collective is a music and creative arts collective that aims to provide a platform for emerging UK artists. Their nights offer a musical journey of fused beats, nu jazz, hip hop, funk and soul, with plenty of good vibes to go round. For tonight's new years eve special, they welcome special guests Jon Kennedy and Visionary Underground. Entrance of a tenner or £7 in advance is exceptionally good value.
W.A.N.G
Andrew Weatherall should need no introduction, he's a legend simple and plain. a 4 hour set from him alongside an apperance from Plaid and from A Guy Called Gerald should be enough to convince you that £15 for a ticket to this is extremely good value.
