Something special is happening at The Gramaphone; Amanda Gegg explores the reasons why you can not afford to miss the relaunch of Essence of Chi...

Every so often an event comes along that promises to be something special. Thursday 1st April at The Gramaphone is one of those nights... Essence of Chi is returning to Shoreditch and setting up shop in the intimate and underground setting of The Gramaphone. They'll be kick-starting their residency on Easter Thursday by inviting in the guys from CIA Records to host the party. This can only mean one thing: top notch appearances from the best names in the drum 'n' bass industry.

To the untrained dnb eyes, this may not seem like a very big deal. However, if you look a bit further back into Essence of Chi's history you'll see that they've built up a reputation as one of the best drum 'n' bass hosts in the country. Born in Brixton in 2004, they have gradually taken over the UK with a series of residencies and tours stretching all the way from Leeds down to Brighton. And when you look at a list of the names that they have booked, it's clear they're promoters to take note of. Some of their nights have taken on the likes of Fabio, Marcus Intalex, Shy FX, Goldie, Deekline... the list is endless. Backed up by the hard-hitting bass sounds of Funktion One, these guys and their events are basically unstoppable.

1st April sees Total Science of CIA Records headlining the Gramaphone festivities alongside Zero T & Spy. This, in itself, is something to take notice of, not to mention the first London appearance of resident MC Lowqui on his UK & European tour. So, if you feel like partying with the best promoters and sounds wizards in the business, then there's only one thing left for you to do; get yourself down to the Gramaphone for some grimey Easter celebrations. We'll see you there.
