Hospitality Vs Ram?

Amanda Gegg takes a further look into the differences between Hospitality and Ram at Matter...

Any drum 'n' bass fan will happily tell you the difference between Hospital and Ram Records. It is a case of liquid versus grime, light against dark, chalk and cheese... But posing the two events against each other at their shared venue Matter: who is to say which is the better night?

The most obvious defining features between Hospitality and Ram are the types of dnb label that they represent. This goes hand in hand with the artists that front them. If you were going to compare them, you might say in this case it would be High Contrast set against Andy C. Both of these DJs/producers are integral to their record labels and their presence affects the outcome of any night they put on at Matter.

There are many who would say that Andy C rules the dnb roost with his insanely heavy grime-ridden tracks. Every time he plays at Matter, he takes his place in the DJ booth like a king stepping up to his thrown. This is exactly reflected in the reception he gets from the crowd. The main stage in Room One is always free for people to dance on, along with the side platforms, so that there are literally fans at every angle. This is what he thrives on and it generally turns out that his sets get heavier and heavier. However, the downside of this is that it takes at least half an hour to get anywhere in the club so you have to plan ahead if you don't want to miss anything.

When High Contrast headlines Hospitality at Matter, he has his decks set up on the main stage. This creates more of a gig-like atmosphere, which admittedly is not as heavy as any Ram artist, but has an equal impact. The liquid bass has the ability to flood through your brain, especially if you are immersed in the thick of the dancefloor. There is something about looking up to your favourite DJ on a stage that makes it more satisfying and euphoric.

The other main difference between Hospitality and Ram is the people that attend. There is no doubt about the fact that both events are immensely popular, both selling out every time. But it would be a lie to say that both are as liberal as each other.

Ram Records personifies intensity through its dark take on drum 'n' bass and this consequently attracts fans that take it very seriously. Ram is responsible for the likes of Chase and Status, Red One and Sub Focus (to name a few) and fans travel from far and wide to see them play. There is little talking, but a great deal of inert appreciation.

There are those who would say that Hospitality has a more approachable atmosphere. Judging by recent events, it does seem to be a younger crowd, but they are, on the whole, surprisingly welcoming and open to the idea of a friendly chat. For many people, this would make for a more enjoyable night and a greater sense of shared appreciation for Hospital regulars such as London Elektricity and Utah Jazz.

Both Hospital and Ram are incredibly well-received events with line-ups that always boast the best in the business. The choice is now yours to decide which one of them floats your boat. In order to make an informed decision, there's no harm checking out both...
