Interview with Filthy Fiction

Interview with Filthy Fiction

Alya Mooro talks tunes, production and super powers with Filthy Fiction.

Filthy Fiction – a DJing/producing duo that separately go by the names Jeevan and Teo – merge to form one hell of a team. Friends since the age of eleven, the boys combine to spin out some of the best sounding eclectic house tracks London has to offer – DJing at the likes of Pacha and Ministry before settling into a studio to produce some of their own tracks. That’s not to say they won't still be single-handedly making people dance: catch them at Bond on Kingly Street on Fridays or check out their Twitter @filthyfiction to stay up to date.

What are you currently working on?

We just moved into a new studio so it's all been pretty hectic. Other than working with some up-and-coming artists we're in the middle of producing an EP, which we'll hopefully put out some time in the near future.

What made you want to get into music?

We both had brothers who were in the music scene when we were growing up so it was all pretty natural. We got into production from such a young age that it was just a matter of turning it into a profession.

What genres did you listen to growing up, and have they changed as you got older?

Pretty much everything. Anything which sounded good really! Our taste in music hasn't really changed. Fair enough, we've discovered new genres that emerge from the underground scene, but even now, when we look back over our music collection, we find hidden gems. You can't beat old school!

How has your music evolved since you first began?

It's started to actually make sense! Before we used to try and fuse about eight different genres into one song, which as you can imagine, won't sound amazing. As we've matured, we've become more selective with the instruments, vocals, effects etc that we apply to each track.

What would your superpowers be?

Teo: I want to fly so I can visit all the people around the world that have ever berated me on youtube so I can give them a piece of my mind!

Jeevan: I wish I had ears of steel so I stop getting this ringing in my ears every time I leave a club.

How did you guys meet? Was there an instant musical understanding about what you wanted to accomplish?

We went to the same school since we were 11 and both started DJing from the age of 13 so there was always a common interest and understanding in what we were doing. I still don't think we know what we want to accomplish; we just love making music!

What would you do with a million pounds?

Purchase presents for all our loved ones, buy a few microphones and give the rest to charity.

What made you decide to go into producing as well as DJing? Is there one that you prefer over the other, and why?

It came to a point where we would love certain stems from tracks but not the complete song, so we began learning to sample. We're talking about the days of dance ejay. It just blossomed from there!

There's nothing like playing a track that you've produced and getting a great response from the crowd. Nowadays, DJing and producing goes hand-in-hand. I think we both prefer production but there aren't many things that give you the buzz you get from dropping a track in front of hundreds of people.

What equipment do you use for your production? Do you have a favourite bit of equipment and why?

The essentials are Logic Pro, an Apogee Ensemble or Duet. We love our Focal monitors and can't really live without Native Instruments Komplete. But the list could go on...

What or whom do you believe influences your work?

We listen to so many different styles of music so it's hard to name a few. I guess it's why we don't really produce one specific genre. We're both big Deadmau5 fans, but then again Prince is the man.

If the world really does end in 2012 what do you hope to have achieved by then?

To produce Milli Vanilli's comeback album!

Is there anything you’re currently working on that you want to big up?

I wish we were more organised to answer this question. I guess www.soundcloud.com/filthyfiction. It's where we post all our latest tracks, downloads etc. Check it out!
