If you're in the mood to show off your wrist twisting University-learnt foosball* skills, Café Kick is the place to be. This lively but laid back Portuguese bar and restaurant is full of well-used and abused tables, with plenty of competition around to challenge players of all skill levels. The competition heats up once a month on a Thursday, when the downstairs portion is taken over by the best foosballers in London! These players would give Friends Joey and Chandler a right pasting; foosball at its most supreme.
If you're easily intimidated, stick upstairs to play the regulars who drop in for a game or two after work. The downstairs gold medal hopefuls are so hardcore they bring their own tape and handles to perfect their grips. Obviously, I stick to upstairs, as I have the coordination of a 5 year old, and get a tad scared that one of the prostars in their "World Foosball Champ 2000/2008" tee's will start yelling at me for breaking their 8 year unbeaten record. Oh, and just a heads up, they get angry if you panic and use the ever popular but completely outlawed 'spin' technique.
But, if you're up for the challenge, it's easy to get involved in the tournament; all you need is £3.00 and the guts to play alongside the best. Once you are registered, your name is drawn at random, so you could be playing alongside someone who has been doing it for years, or a total newbie! Café kick boasts a great atmosphere, perhaps a bit competitive, but if that’s what you’re after, it is definitely the place to be!
