A star struck Benjamin Goode talks to the cosmos bound Dâm Funk before his upcoming show.
Someone, somewhere in the Plan B programming department has impeccable taste. Feeding Time and Deadly Rhythm join forces to bring you one the events of, dare I say it? 2010? Hear me out my friends, on the line-up we have Deviation head-honcho and 1Xtra legend Benji B, Rinse FM's Alexander Nut, Benny Blanco and Mr Wonderful. Pretty good no? And, as if that weren't enough, headlining is the 'Ambassador of Boogie Funk' and founding citizen of the Funkmosphere the one, the only, the one like Dâm Funk.
Following the release of his debut album Toeachizown on Stones Throw (easily one of the most exciting releases of last year), L.A based Dâm (pronounced Dame as in Damon) Funk is touching down in London town, Plan B in Brixton to be precise, peddling his vast array of vintage synths and sublime bass heavy intergalactic harmonies.
As a DJ he attracts only the most discerning purchasers of boogie, modern soul and electro funk. Think early Prince and Roger Troutman having a love child with Barbarella, which is a sexy thought, but this night is really for anyone who loves great music. Here he shares some of his thoughts with us
I'm very excited to see you coming to my home town and more specifically to my local area... What I would like to ask you, to start off with, is taking this lyric as a reference point: Brookside Park, If you were there you'd know, Brookside Park, Gangsters and UFO's. How in touch with the universe are you? And how does the concept of the universal combined with very specific notions of a local area and personal identity (a personhood, we could call it) translate into your music?
D-F: Very in touch with the universe. I'm practising automatic astral travel on my own these days. A goal of mine is to be able to do that (astral travel) whenever I want and then create music from that realm and mind state, in turn...bringing that music back here to us. The local area aspect X personal identity is in my music, of course. Yet, I like to view things with an intergalactic outlook. Beyond earth. I would like my music to be felt by all. Not just humans, but all races everywhere throughout our universe.
I appreciate that you are down to DJ only but for those that don't know, what can we expect from your live show?
D-F: Synthesizers, loud claps, soulful basslines, drum machines, live drums, vocals, vocoder action, and the sound originating from Pasadena, California...beamin' from the speakers for all to get into and vibe to.
Mr Funk I would hesitate to categorise you as a retro artist (in fact I am strongly against it) but do you think that nowadays one can get more bounce for their ounce, or less... in general?
D-F: Less. But, this is changing. I'm here to 'help' change that. We do need more 'bounce to the ounce' (as you put it) as opposed to 'headbangin only' goin on. (LOL) What I'm trying to show is that...it's okay to bounce too! To groove. Lay in it. We need that 'groove' back, bottom line. It's coming, at least the 'choice' is coming back. Stay tuned.
Thank you very much for time and kind regards.
D-F: Peace Benjamin.
Peace to you also Mr Funk.
