Benjamin Goode hits Notting Hill Arts Club for another edition of YoYo.
It was a roadblock, by the time Jess Mills took to the stage, except she more shimmered out the ether in a puff of gold dust, it was almost impossible to see. Well, if you're a short fat man, which I am, it was hard.
Since time immemorial pretty girls and boys with good voices of a certain disposition have always wanted to get on a stage (any stage) and sing, I suppose a little like mildly articulate vain-glorious public school boys have always wanted to be writers? Jess Mills isn't pretty though, she is achingly beautiful and despite the venue's notoriously bad sound quality there was not one bum note.
His Girl Friday for the duration of their short set were consistently good, playing a highly polished pop with lyrics that belied the simple pleasures of their eminently danceable songs. After their six song short set of many highlights ('Middle of Nowhere' and 'Blackout' being particularly standout tracks) that left people wanting much more; YoYo's then proceeded to do what they do best week-in week-out, which is play the tunes that make you wish you didn't have work the next day.
Having already supported Just Jack at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, and given the rapturous reception that they received at YoYo's, this unsigned song-writing duo are so up-and-coming that it is probably advisable to catch them now before the only way to see them is with your face in someone's armpit.
