Zinc And MJ Cole At The Westbury

Zinc And MJ Cole At The Westbury

Zinc and MJ Cole at the Westbury probably the most kick-arse night in town.

The Westbury is one of the nicest venues I've been to in a long time. It has somehow managed to combine the spacious, leather-upholstered comfort of a homely Victorian pub with the music policy of the most upwardly mobile club around. And there's a packed-to-the-rafters feel to match. It's filled with media professionals and incredibly friendly bar staff, and I arrive just in time for the start of MJ Cole's set.

It's a real pop-off affair. The short version would be that, as the drink flowed, tune after tune after tune gets dropped. But that would almost be too simplistic: it's great tune, followed by classic tune followed by great tune, followed by classic tune... Before I even get to the cloakroom I've knocked someone's drink over to 'Crazy in Love', hugged a stranger for the new Zed Bias and MJ Cole collaboration 'Big in The Game' and inadvertently punched a girl in the face to 'Booo!'

In between my malcoordinated vocal expressions of over enthusiastic appreciation there's the smoothest choices in late night cuts to keep us dancing until Zinc comes on. Zinc starts with house, and over the course of the next two hours of his set proceeds to prove why, throughout his vast, far-reaching and genre-jumping career he has been continuously viewed as the most progressive, fresh and original producer around. Pioneering new classics with every move, Music Makers being a particularly effective example on the night.

The Westbury is all on one floor, but manages to avoid feeling like one giant dingy room. The party rages from the seated booths, to the bar, to the raised dais and back to the dance floor; wherever you look there are people making merry. Everything is kept in check by the eminently reasonable, humerous and no-nonsense ( please read as rather huge) security. By the time Zinc drops 'Wile Out' on us all there's no other option but for everyone to have full flip out, and in the best possible way crown a very enjoyable and fundamentally wholesome evening. Wonderful.
