Girls Aloud's Kimberley Walsh takes over from Amanda Holden in Shrek The Musical.

Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh prepares to make a royal stage appearance as Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical as it is announced that Amanda Holden will be leaving the show earlier than expected.

Holden, who has played the role of the feisty princess since the show started previewing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in May, has announced today that she is pregnant and will have to leave sooner than planned. Her final turn opposite the big green ogre will be on Monday 3 October, with Walsh taking over from 5 October.

Walsh, who makes up one fifth of pop group Girls Aloud, seems determined to pursue an acting career while the girls all take some time away from the band. She recently appeared in a supporting role in the film adaptation of popular children’s book Horrid Henry and revealed on ITV2 documentary The Passions of Girls Aloud that her dream was to play the role of Eponine in Les Miserables.

Shrek The Musical, based on the DreamWorks film about an anti-social ogre, transferred to the West End from Broadway in May, officially opening on 14 June. The musical, complete with a score of new songs, follows the adventures of the eponymous ogre and his talkative donkey sidekick as they rescue Princess Fiona in a fairytale with a difference.
