The Royal Court's Theatre Local project moves into The Bussey Building.

The Royal Court Theatre will be taking its Theatre Local initiative to Peckham this autumn, setting up residence at The Bussey Building from 29 September. The Bloomberg-sponsored project, which stages plays in alternative spaces, launched last year with a sold-out season at Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre. The return of Theatre Local will include new plays by Debbie Tucker Green and Rachel De-Lahay.

The Bussey Building, once a cricket bat factory, was saved from demolition thanks to a campaign by local pressure group Peckham Vision and is now at the heart of a thriving cultural scene in Peckham. The new season here will open with Debbie Tucker Green's truth and reconciliation, examining the different conflicts in South Africa, Rwanda, Bosnia, Zimbabwe and Northern Ireland, and will continue with the world premiere of The Westbridge, a piece by the Royal Court's Young Writer's Programme alumna Rachel De-Lahay.

In addition to these plays, Theatre Local will be running a series of workshops and other events that aim to engage the local community. The Royal Court's artistic director Dominic Cooke commented: “I have long been fascinated by the unique and unpredictable connection that happens every night on stage between the performers and the audience and so we constantly strive to keep this feeling alive by developing relationships with new theatregoers - I’m very much looking forward to continuing this and getting to know our new Peckham neighbours.”
