event The Duchess of Malfi
Friday, 26 March
Last night I saw Duchess of Malfi, the second of the two plays running at the Greenwich- set in more modern times, it shows Webster's Jacobean classic in a more modern wartime setting. Fine set and strong, professional cast demonstrate the human failings still so relevant today- power leading to corruption, cruelty, madness and revenge. You will also find plenty to dwell on re disgraceful church leader, role of women in society, love, responsibilities in government et al; fine food for thought- Dickens would have approved, I'm sure.
These two classics will soon be recorded on dvd, so if you can't see them live, (which you should!)then do get the dvds, excellent for schools too, with teacher notes and subtitles included. Great effort by 'Stage On Screen' teaming up with the Greenwich- an exciting new format for presenting the classics. Their website is www.stageonscreen.com

event Mother Goose
Monday, 07 December
Well defined story line with lively songs and excellent performance from Mother Goose (Andrew Pollard, who also wrote it) well assisted by Squire Georgy Porgy, who work superbly together and involve the children with great skill. Demonica Baddegg was stunning and bad, balanced by the particularly fine voice of Fairy Featherlight. Prescilla the Goose had great personality (difficult, couped up and must get vey hot).
The songs are varied and well sung, with fine musical support and excellent sound effects, lots of good dancing and very clever sketches which leave young and old laughing together. I loved the obvious thrill of the audience and the straightforward quality, family, fun approach of this production.
Excellent? Oh no it isn't, OH YES IT IS!
