Desi.Licious at Ministry of Sound

Having beeen at university for 4 weeks without a single night out clubbing (shocking for a first year), Desi.licious at Ministry of Sound has a lot of expectation to live up to. Especially after paying £12 for a ticket! However, there's a great line up of live Asian acts, Jazzy B, Safri, DJ Vix, Nirmal Sidhu and more, making me less resentful about parting with my cash.

Not being the most hard core party-goer you could say that I'm too easily pleased; all I need for a good night is a few mates, great music and most importantly cheap drinks. The Ministry provides.

About an hour after the doors open the two rooms are completely packed out, especially the bhangra room. In room 2, where I spend nearly the whole night, there's mostly rnb, hip hop, funky house and even a few dance tunes – a good mix of music providing something for everyone. Nearly every song has someone shouting 'ah cchhooonnne!' with their arms in the air.

By now the bhangra room is overflowing with people. Nobody can get in, except those fortunate few who are over 6ft tall and possess the ability to part water. Unfortunately, I'm one of the wimps who can't fight my way through the heaving crowd. I end up missing the live acts, although for the brief time I'm fighting for space I do introduce my own style of crazy bhangra dancing, a spectacle for any onlookers. Many may feel a little ambivalent about the whole bhangra style… it's a melee of fast-paced drunken arms and legs flying everywhere, and requires a certain skill to be able to dodge being hit in the face. All the other dancers seem to be guys twice my size!

Desi.Licious definitely exceeds my expectations. Despite missing all of the live acts, it's a great first university night out for me. I'm already sorting out tickets for the December Desi.licious, and next time I'll be ready to fight my way through.
