Twilight Premiere: Red Carpet Report

The world has officially gone Twilight crazy. Based on the best selling novel by Stephenie Meyer, the new fantasy movie has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide and taken $70.6 million in its opening weekend, shooting to the top spot in the US film charts. Here I am at the London premiere, which is no exception to the fanatical hype.

One of four novels, Twilight follows a forbidden love story between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, played by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson respectively. When we meet the 17 year old vampire he's been part of the world for over a century.

Despite the minus two degrees temperature in Leicester Square, thousands of screaming teenagers are packed against the barriers surrounding the shimmering black 'red carpet'. Celebrity Z-listers warm the crowd and give them a chance to warm their screaming chords. Then Kristen steps on to the carpet.

Waiting for over twelve hours, the fans towards the front are overwhelmed to see their characters come to life. They're frantic. Cameras flash and teenagers are in tears.

The novels have been compared to the Harry Potter series with a touch more drama and a spicier romance between the lead characters. The fans I speak to are completely engrossed in Robert Pattisonthe characters, despite not having seen the movie yet. 

As Kristen signs autographs in the blistering cold, Pattinson enters the scene. Ear-bursting high pitch screams filling the air. Polite as they are, the stars linger for just over an hour in the frost to please the fans and media until they're hauled inside for more press and publicity.
