event The Jago presents Saturday, 20 June
Brilliant! Spoken word and music in a little bar-cum gallery that's intimate, but not too much of a squeeze. My last visit included a questionable performance from a couple of poncho clad guitarists, poetry about computer games and a surprisingly moving song from next door's bouncer.
event Avenue Q Saturday, 20 June
So we're all a tad racist, true love sometimes walks hand in hand with true hate, and life might be meaningless. And? Perhaps I read too many reviews which proclaimed Avenue Q as one of those cutting edge, boundary pushing performances. I was in the mood for controversy, and I was disappointed. The bad idea bears, however, were adorably wicked.
event Dengue Fever Monday, 13 October
Cambodian pop meets psychedelic rock...two guys from Los Angeles are inspired after visiting SE Asia and one trip to Little Phnom Penh in Long Beach later, singer Chhom Nimol is discovered and Dengue Fever is born. I stumbled across their music last year by accident after I caught the cursed disease in South America; 30 years after the Khmer Rouge regime the band has brought back the Cambodian flavours that were so rigidly outlawed by Pol Pot back in the 70’s. Hypnotic Khmer lyrics fused with reverberating guitar...yum!
