Bogan Bingo

Bogan Bingo

Bogan Bingo is not for the faint hearted. If you’re not a fan of 80’s mullets and spontaneous air guitar isn’t your cup of tea, it’s advisable to make a swift exit.

However, judging by the largely antipodean crowd in the Shepherds Bush Walkabout on Monday evening, there weren’t many tea drinkers present. A far cry from handbag wielding Granny bingo, this is a night you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry.

The rules are simple. Trev and Tim- our bogan hosts from Australia- ‘roll out their balls’ along to the dulcet tones of AC/DC and Def Leppard, until some lucky individual claims a line on their bingo card. The winner must venture onstage where the ‘wheel of death’ will name their bounty. There are some worthy prizes to be snapped up- including over £100 in cold, hard cash- but you risk landing the ‘death’ card or even worse, going home with an iron.

For all the uneducated Poms out there, a ‘bogan’ is much like the British chav…but not as classy. Or so I was told, as I have yet to come across a classy chav. Bursting onto the stage with an energetic magnetism to  rival cheerleaders on speed, our mullet-clad hosts and their hyperactive chatter made for a very entertaining evening, if a little nerve-wracking at times.

Those expecting a quiet Monday night in the pub will be disappointed, these guys make you work for your prizes. As always, a little Dutch courage goes a long way and when you find yourself facing a gaggle of strangers, clutching your crotch and shrieking ‘Bogan Bingo!’ to claim your goods, you might wish you’d swilled that extra pint.

Still keen? You’ll need to act quickly as the boys are off to Edinburgh soon. It’s £5 for a bingo card and if you can cope with the madness this soon after the weekend you may just be ready to take on anything that comes your way.
