Claire Shropshall mulls over the delights of underground house music.

Tonight Mulletover presents an array of esoteric delights to send the January blues packing with the stirring sounds of their January Sale.  A far cry from the luminous facades just round the corner in Shoreditch it’s dark, dingy, shuddering with hard house reverberations and there's not a pair of skinny jeans in sight.

Gadi Mizrahi – one half of record label Wolf and Lamb – takes to the decks in a solo endeavour prior to releasing new EPs this spring, Boston based duo Soul Clap and Richie Ahmed grace the stage and Mulletover regular Stuart Geddes plays to a rapturous crowd.

The venue – the clue's in the name here –  once a karate club and gym now provides an intimate, eerily lit basement that's perfect for an old school knees-up. Unwritten clubbing rules dictate that toilet sanitation acts as a good barometer for the quality of the party and, judging by the grime-factor of the facilities at the Black Lotus Karate Club, we are in for a good night.

Richie Ahmed kicks off with an electricity laced set. A regular at Below in Birmingham and Dirty Disco in Leeds, his filthy beats ricochet off the walls to get the crowd moving, and Gadi Mizrahi and Soul Clap provide a taste of the NYC music renaissance sweeping across America with a hedonistic melange of smooth, spacey sounds. Geddes once again delivers his own variety of raw and ethereal house - this unique, enthusiastic style being the main vehicle in pushing the Mulletover brand to the forefront of London clubbing since its inception six years ago. It’s gritty, high-voltage madness, and I rather like it.

It was a dearth of good London club nights that inspired the Mulletover boys to conceive these regular sessions, and their injection of olden-day secret raving into modern club culture has proven a storming success.

As my first real foray into underground house I'm now wholly converted to the church of Mulletover, and will be making regular trips back.
