Gig Preview: Introducing

Having an album in the Guinness Book of Records for being made up entirely of samples is no mean feat. Especially when the music in question is a groundbreaking, soulful and intricate journey through music history, that creates unique and original compositions in the process. Orchestrated by one man armed with an Akai MPC 60 drum machine, an early Pro-tools recording set-up and a ton of dusty vinyl, the resulting sound is of a producer/DJ devoted to and completely immersed in his craft, creating timeless music that sounds fresh some 13 years later.

DJ Shadows’ seminal ‘Endtroducing’ album has inspired a new generation of DJs/producers and musicians alike. It’s now getting the live treatment for the first time with the help of Oxford-based nine-piece band Introducing. The line-up consists of a scratch DJ, an actor (and a vocal FX box), a bassist, a Chinese hip hop keyboard virtuoso, and a sax and flute player, alongside keyboards and guitar and drums.

Introducing's note-for-note recreation has already been turning heads on the festival circuit. After their debut at Festinho in 2008, Radio 1's Rob da Bank booked them for consecutive Bestivals in 2008 & 2009. Their gig at the Jazz Cafe back in October quickly sold out and the band is returning to the intimate confines of the legendary venue to reproduce the classic material.

With multi-layered samples and unorthodox arrangements to recreate, ‘Endtroducing’ is a mighty hard album to cover with a live band. As Matt Derbyshire, the brains behind the operation, explains, “The most important thing about these albums we are recreating is the sonic content. Also, there are sometimes a lot of parts, so Mick (sax), Andy (keys) and myself (guitar) all have a keyboard to hand to play sounds. I think we've only got one loop in the whole set and the concept of any backing tracks was outlawed from day one!”

As the tickets are a recession friendly £10 in advance, there really are few excuses not to be at the Jazz Cafe this coming week to witness the recreation of a genre-defining album into a live stage performance. Not to be missed by anyone.
