Mad Professor has a track record in reggae/dub production longer than Damien Marley’s dreadlocks and a legacy equalled only by King Tubby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry. His legendary mixing board skills have been in demand for the best part of two decades; Massive Attack requested that he remix their 'Protection' album with groundbreaking results and huge critical acclaim that followed the release.
Before a very sparsely populated Jazz Café crowd (making for a surreal setting), Mad Professor takes to the stage accompanied by his trusty old mixing board and lovers rock singer Susan Cadogan.
The music wafting through the speakers is a merry blend of dubbed out beats with heavy basslines that seem to echo around the venue - sounds more suited to a Trojan Soundsystem in a crowded sweatbox. Cadogan’s dulcet tones lend a welcome dimension to the proceedings and make for a good vocal tag-team, with Mad Professor unexpectedly adding another string to his bow with some on-point backing vocals.
Another addition to the show arrives in the form of five female dancers looking the part in traditional African garb. They sashay on just as Cadogan exits stage left to take a deserved break. A series of well crafted Bob Marley remixes and a nice surprise of a Bob Dylan remix (repetition) follow, picking up the energy levels as the dancers gyrate to the classic melodies.
Although there isn’t much in the performance to disappoint the few people who do turn up, but the distinct lack of atmosphere is tangible - especially in a venue as intimate as the Jazz Café. Maybe at Fabric next week, Mad Professor and his dub show will get the setting and the crowd that his talents richly deserve.
