Wu-Tang clan head honcho the RZA drops into super club Matter as part of his UK tour in support of his soon to be released 'Tao Of Wu' book. This is probably the first tour of its kind for a rapper, however RZA is far from your everyday rapper. Since forming the Wu Tang Clan in 1992, RZA has produced the vast majority of all Wu Tang group albums, countless tunes for all solo members of the Wu and gone onto compose music for films such as Ghost Dog, Blade 2 and Kill Bill 1 and 2. Now a budding actor and film director and as well as an author, 'Tao of the Wu' is the follow up to 'The Wu Tang Manual' RZA's first foray into the literary world – clearly the man's creativity knows no bounds.
Picking up from where the Wu Manual left off, 'Tao of the Wu', RZA expands on his favourite topics – martial arts, chess, religion, philosophy and music all tied together with autobiographical stories – told in his own uniquely eclectic style.
Although his solo albums have been patchy yet entertaining affairs, every time RZA links back up with fellow Clan members quality music is never far away - as witnessed by his production contributions to Raekwon's new 'Only Built for Cuban Linx 2' album.
'O4CL2' is the sequel to the original 'OB4CL' released back in 1995 when the Wu-Tang were at the peak of their powers and just every RZA beat was a surefire hit. The sequel took on mythical status on a par with Dr Dre's 'Detox' and Guns 'n' Roses 'Chinese Democracy' albums, with prolonged recording process and record label changes constantlyback pushing the albums long anticipated release date further and further back. However when it finally arrived on the shelves three weeks ago, it proved to be a very welcome return to form for Raekwon who joins RZA onstage for only the London leg of RZA's UK tour.
As always with Wu-Tang live shows, expect an energized performance of crowd favourites and new material as well as the unexpected. With special guests lined up and BBC1 Extra's DJ Semtex warming up the crowd, Matter should be top of the must go list for Hip-hop heads this Saturday night.
