Roy Ayers at the Jazz Cafe

Pioneering Jazz - Funk maestro Roy Ayers has been on the music scene crafting classic tunes, composing film soundtracks and touring the world with his trusty Vibraphone for the best part of five decades now. He rolled into town during the festive period with his backing band Ubiquity for a weeklong residence at the Jazz Café to show his loyal following he hasn't lost a step.

The soothing melodic tones of the Ayers vibraphone is one of the most distinctive sounds in music and tonight it adds sprinkles of audio delight over the tight funky grooves provided by the virtuoso's performances of the Ubiquity musicians.  One look at the audience is enough to see the diverse range of people that Ayer's music has reached, from people who have followed him through out his lengthy career to newcomers who have heard his music sampled extensively in Hip-hop or featured in computer games such as Grand Theft Auto. The uplifting funk of 'Running Away' and the lush laid back 'Searching' is received enthusiastically with the crowd swaying and dancing in unison.

After the obligatory round of solo's that included a spectacular drum solo with drumsticks being scraped across the low ceiling perfectly in the rhythm, Ayer's leaves the stage briefly only to return for the encore. During which, the much anticipated 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' arguably his most well known song is performed with a warmth that belies the sub zero temperatures outside. Even though Ayer's has more than enough songs to play an extended encore, this proves to be the last song of an all too brief 75-minute set. Still, time fly's when you are having fun and Ayer's continues to bring good times to audience's from every stage he graces.
