Electric Circus

Electric Circus

For those of us that prefer a little extra OOMPH! to our nights out, Electric Circus sure do a great job of laying down a night of the weird and wonderful. Billed as a 'miniature indoor festival of lurve', it was hard to know where to start with this unique and interesting night out.

For an event that is attempting the festival feel, the Scala lends itself well with multiple rooms catering for an array of various acts. With a huge, huge line-up, it's an interesting venue that worked well with something happening in each room throughout the whole of the night. Their circus theme breaks the traditions of clowns and juggling, with the involvement of not only amazing aerial artists but cutting edge performance art and some of the UK's leading DJs.

In the bar area there's the silhouette of a pole-dancing naked woman. Once inside it's hard to keep up with all that's happening - it's a visual assault course, in the nicest of ways, as you traverse from one room to another taking in the wacky delights that Electric Circus have put on.

In the main room there's a man juggling with a chainsaw, petrol fumes and smoke permeating the air. He looks a little unnerved and funnily enough, so do the audience, so I make an executive decision and take a step back: no photo is worth that kind of pain.

It's refreshing to see that people have kept with the theme, donning some of their strangest costumes. It's difficult not bumping into the back of someone, who may just turn around and be covered in the strangest of deformed circus clown make-up. With so many odd performers scattered throughout the venue, it soon becomes hard to tell who's a performer and who's a guest. Which begs the question, aren't we all performers in the circus of our own world? It's a weird and whacky world of Electric Circus and with this many performers and artists, I'm looking forward to the next big-top circus night out they put together...
