Perez Hilton - One Night in... London

Perez Hilton - One Night in... London

Perez Hilton lands in London with some of his big-shot celebrity pals and, um, the Hoosiers.

Love him or hate him, Perez Hilton's infamous Hollywood gossip website has crafted him an envious career that means he has the likes of Lady Gaga on speed dial. Whilst his name may be synonymous with scandals across the Atlantic, Perez has recently been turning his hand to nurturing new musical acts with the launch of his own record label. Branching out further from dissing celebs online, his events touch down in London town for his aptly named 'One Night In London' at the O2's smaller IndigO2 room. Tickets were free from Perez's website.

At first I'm a bit perturbed about walking into a half-filled room full of people watching what appears to be a choir of prepubescent girls miming along to The Puppini Sisters' version of 'Mr. Sandman'. Luckily that soon finishes and although the event is free, I'm still a little confused about how there seem to be so few people there. After all this is Perez, self-titled Queen of All Media, friend (and foe) to the stars. Surely there's going to be some big named acts tonight?

Well, next up are The Hoosiers, whose inoffensive pop-rock seems to drag in a few more. It takes me a while to work out who the next act is: a breathy urchin whose styling may have gone down the pan slightly, dressed in a giant doily dress. Turns out it's Diana Vickers. Say no more.

It picks up when the real acts, introduced personally by Perez (and not billed on the line-up), are announced. Peaches, a lady you don't wanna mess with, walks the crowd (amongst threats that "If you drop me, this show WILL be over") and has everyone screaming to her best known electro stomper, 'Fuck The Pain Away'.

When headliner Kelis is announced the venue seems to fill out dramatically, with everyone desperate to get a glance of one of pop music's women of the moment. Decked out in a slinky skin-tight purple mini-dress, high heels and a strange piece of headwear, Kelis takes to stage for a medley of her latest album, 'Fleshtone'.

Her voice is smooth and husky, and whilst she may not be the best vocalist, she certainly does a good job of engaging a crowd and enjoying herself on stage. At one point she plonks the mic back in its stand and treats the audience to a timed booty wobble, showing off her fine assets. A far cry from her debut image, her latest incarnation shows the strong image of a divorcee, a mother, and most of all, an artist not ready to give up.
