Keeping it classy in the East End

Where?
Cheshire Street, just off Brick Lane.
How much?
£20-£30 for drinks
Why?
First dates are always a tricky one. Doing something too zany like rock climbing or sailing makes you look like a psycho, the pictures means you can’t talk and going to a restaurant seems a little full on for the first time you take someone out.
No, as with many things in life, the safety first approach is the best way forward for that first crucial date; that’s why I love the Carpenters Arms. Located just over the road from Beyond Retro, it’s everything you need a pub to be when you’re trying to paint yourself as the knowledgeable man about town. Classy, but not intimidatingly classy, friendly without being massively rowdy all the time and picturesque rather than being stuffy and old manish, it’s not normally that busy on a weekday night, and if it’s sunny, the little yard at the back is pretty pleasant.
Oh yeah, it’s also really close to the Overland if you need to make a swift exit!
Top tips?
A former haunt of the Krays, you can impress your date with a little bit of East End knowledge (warning – doing this may make you look boring).
