Buffalo, Bonding and Tom Tom Club: Editor's Choice - Live Music

Dom Haley selects his top three gigs for the week ahead

Male Bonding
Tuesday 12th July

Avi Buffalo @ KOKO

These guys seem to have  their cuteness factor ramped up to 11. Hailing from sunny little town in California Avi Buffalo may look more like Mrs Greave’s Year 9 art class than an actual band, but beneath the ponchos and awkward muttering lies a band who can mix light-hearted indie pop with the more experimental end of seventies rock like seasoned pros.

Thursday 14th July
Male Bonding @ Buffalo Bar

Like most people who live in North London, we’ve seen Male Bonding almost a thousand times already, but even now, their fuzz, blissed-out indie pop makes us weak at the knees. Having recently added a second guitarist in the mix, the band have started to move away from the jerky post punk and more into the realms of '90s Sonic Youth, with rather spectacular results.

Friday 15th and Saturday 16th July
Tom Tom Club @ Jazz Club

One of the few bands who actually changed the course of modern music, Tom Tom Club bridged the gap between ‘80s New York’s cool as hell art scene and the high-gloss world of MTV with a sound that tosses Bootsy Collins, Gang of Four and Grandmaster Flash together into smart dance jams that you can’t help but bust a move to.  It’s no joke to say that without this band, modern music would be a poorer place indeed.
