Creeping Nobodies at The Old Blue Last

If you’ve never heard of Chaos Vs Cosmos, then you've been missing out. Whilst everyone are sitting around at home listening to their new Italo-Disco comp or whatever, these guys are busy churning out gigs packed with some of the wackiest bands around, turning what should be a normal night at your local boozer into a psychedelic trip into the nether-reaches of the human psyche.

The Creeping Nobodies are a band that could have been tailor made for Chaos Vs Cosmos – a menagerie of paranoid delusions, fragmented musings, frenetic drums and jarring bass lines, so a night that sees both of them in the same room at the same time under the endorsement of Upset The Rhythm needs to be checked out.

Hands on Heads sound like Q and Not U sped up – it's been a long time since I last saw musicians of this talent. Playing inventive, mathy, yet hook laden pop, the bassist and guitarist are completely berserk too, throwing out some of the wildest rhythms I've heard from what is ostensively a punk band since The Minute Men packed it in.

On next is The Rebel, who basically relies on a Gameboy, a array of peddles to make excessively weird country punk that sounds like a mash-up of Devo and Woody Gunthrie except way more off the wall than any of them.It takes a bit of getting used too, but when it finally clicks me and my mate have a bit of a ‘Oh I get it moment' and realise that this guy could be a musical genius. A slightly autistic and dirty genius, but a genius none-the-less.

One short cigarette break later (don't worry mum, I wasn't smoking), and its back up stairs to check out The Creeping Nobodies. Starting out with a teeth jarringly heavy drums, they swing into a set of dark rock that comes somewhere between Sonic Youth –esque drone and new wave and the feeling you get when you're lost in the middle of a deep dark forest.

It's this mix of being able to be flip between being nail bitingly intense and just plain scary that makes The Creeping Nobodies so awesome. It's always cool to see a band that are undoubtly brainy and yet don't get caught up in trying to be clever all the time. Who knows, maybe this is the rebirth of shoegaze as we once knew it?

Sadly this may be the last Chaos Vs Cosmos show for a while - but check out their myspace and look at the amazing artwork.
