Give us yer money!

Lucy mentioned it a couple of months ago when she did one of these new bands articles on Milk Maid, but for some reason Manchester seems to be a hotbed of good music at the moment. No longer under the misconception that the Hacienda, The Smiths and Noel Gallagher are the be all and end all of music, from Mazes’ Pavement-meets-Brian Wilson sunshine pop to Miles Kanes’ modish take on new wave, Northern bands seem to love throwing those curve-balls recently.
Already favourites down at the Deaf Institute thanks to a legendary show with Titus Andronicus at the Salford Lad’s Club (yeah that one), Brown Brogues first came to the attention to us southern-types through sets with Spectrals and Californian beach-punks waves, as well as a rip-roaring set down at the Silver Bullett earlier this year.
But hey! Enough with the history lessons and more about what these guys sound like, right? Well first off Brown Brogues are a two-piece, but not in the whole twee Summer Camp/Slow Club kind of way. Although I’m tempted to mention Death From Above, the bands they most remind me of are Ty Segall and The Stooges back in their ‘Raw Power’ days. Hiding barely concealed venom behind superb, almost rockabilly rhythms, this duo’s brand of garage rock is the sort that knocks you down, kicks you in the face and steals your dinner money.

Back from SXSW and touting a new EP, the band are playing a couple of shows in London this week. Oh yeah, if you’ve ever wondered what my 21st Birthday party looked like, I recommend you watch their new video. It’s uncanny.
Brown Brogues play the Old Blue Last this Friday.
