New Bands: Catholic Spray

Hippie, Hippie, Hooray!

If you’ve been watching the news recently, then you’ve probably noticed that Paris has been a seething cauldron of civil unrest, petrol shortages and general bad feelings. But while mobs of rampaging teenager are making sure the French capital burns, the righteous fury is also being funnelled into a new garage rock explosion. What’s more they’re turning their backs on the US and British scene’s more jangly tendencies and getting back to basics by making ear-shredding psych-garage that you can really grind your teeth too.

Although I don’t really get the name, Catholic Spray are my fave. Comprised of four dudes who seem to be every French dad’s worst nightmare, they pump out full-on, no messing psychedelic garage rock that bitch slaps like Thee Oh Sees playing in a Salvador Dalí painting or something. But the best thing about these guys is how cool and French they all are. The two guitarists swagger around looking like extras in a Ramones video, the drummer is mental, and the bassist nonchalantly peers out of from under his bowl cut whilst chain-smoking Lucky Strikes. Needless to say, they probably get a lot of action.

Having recently released a split cassette with organ-led psychedelic maniacs Zyklon Beach on Inch Allah Records, the band are laying low at the moment, although that’s probably more down to the fact that they’re all in a thousand other bands rather than there’s nothing to do. Fortunately, you can download some tracks here, though.

For more on picking up the release, check out Inch Allah Records blog, be warned though, it's in French. Hopefully, Catholic Spray will be playing London very soon.
